HOW TO CHANGE YOUR FLAT TIRE IN AN EMERGENCY

1. Ensure that you pull over somewhere safe
You will be putting yourself and others out of danger by parking in a low-traffic area.
2. Turn on the emergency hazard lights
These lights will encourage other drivers to slow down or move over.
3. Get the jack, wrench and spare tire from the back of the car
These items are usually together under a mat in the boot of a car.
4. Loosen the lug nuts using the wrench
These are the nuts that hold your wheel to the axel. Do not take the nuts off at this stage.
5. Use the jack to lift the car off the ground
Using the car manual, check where the safest place is to put the jack and then jack the car up until the tire is 6 inches off the ground.
6. Remove the lug nuts and pull the tire off
Ensure the nuts are placed in a pile where you won’t lose them. When pulling off the tire, pull it straight towards you.
7. Put the spare tire on the car
Line up the lug nuts with the holes and then push the spare tire all the way to the wheelbase.
8. Lower the car
Using the jack, slowly lower the car back to the ground.
9. Put the lug nuts back on
Tighten the nuts by hand first and then use the wrench. When tightening the lug nuts, use a star pattern to make sure the tire is not crooked.
10. Clean up
Put the damaged tire in the boot of the car along with the tools. Some spare tires are not for extended travel or high speed so travel safe and talk with a professional as soon as possible about replacing the spare for a new tire.
